How to Get the Most out of Your Mastermind Group

The idea of mastermind groups has exploded since Dale Carnegie mentioned the idea in his book Think and Grow Rich. He defines a mastermind group as:

“The coordination of knowledge and effort of two or more people, who work toward a definite purpose, in the spirit of harmony.”

Surrounding yourself with people who are hungry to achieve more out of life creates unwavering motivation, long-lasting, inspiration, a burning desire to excel, and a willingness to succeed.

Jim Rohn said it best, “you are an average of the 5 people you spend the most time with.”

If you are a part of a mastermind already they you know how valuable they are.

And read this article to get more ideas for mastermind groups that you can join.

How To Get The Most Out of Your Mastermind Group

1. Listen Attentively

Many mastermind groups happen online through google hangouts, webinars, Goto meetings, or in Facebook groups. It can be very distracting when you are on attending a webby and your Facebook page is only one click away.

Train yourself to be disciplined with your mastermind sessions. The whole purpose is to pay attention to the pains and struggles others are having so that you can help them. Thus, they will help you when you run into your own challenges.

Listening attentively is a form of respect and you should treat others the way you want to be treated. Put away all your distractions and devote 100% of your attention to the group and be present.

2. Be Honest

It is easy to want to give people the answer that they want to hear. For example, maybe they are having trouble getting up early to work on their online business. They tell you about it (which sounds like an excuse) and you lightly reassure them “Yeah, that’s tough but you will figure it out. Keep trying.”

They need you to be BRUTALLY honest with them and give them a kick in the ass. You should sound something like this, “Dude. Remember when you told me you wanted to travel the world and live a lifestyle that other people normally dream of? Do you think waking up late is getting you closer to that dream? Comon man you gotta get your shit together if you really want to hit your goals because right now you are just making excuses.”

You are being harsh with them because you care about them and their success. You don’t want them to waste time and energy going down the wrong path, so you step in and give it to them straight. They might be resentful at first, but they will respect you for it later.

3. Hold People Accountable

One key element to a successful mastermind group is to hold all the members accountable. Without accountability then there is no discipline or sense of urgency go get things done.

If someone says that they are going to send you a document listing their monthly goals and they don’t, message them and say “dude what happened?”

Of if they promise to host a google hangout and they don’t (which I have been guilty of before), then tell them, “hey man you said you were going to host a hangout. I was really looking forward to that, what’s up?”

You have to be comfortable pushing a little bit. Let them know that you are watching and that they can’t get away with not following through.

They will respect you more for it, and they will see better results because of it.

4. Inspire

Mastermind groups have a lot to do with sharing best practices and strategies that are working for you, but it is also a place where inspiration is born. Being successful in life and business isn’t all sunshines and rainbows. People want to hear how you overcame struggle and sacrifice to reach the top of the mountain.

They want stories that they can relate to that will fuel them to the top as well. So take a break every once and a while from telling the best SEO / Facebook / YouTube strategy and talk about how you climbed from rock bottom, beat depression, and made your first sale shortly after. People go nuts for that stuff.

7. Show Your Support

Sometimes mastermind groups are where we can shamelessly express our frustrations and problems. That is perfectly okay. When you see someone who is venting then step in and reassure them that everyone experiences struggle.

This is a safe haven where you can safely seek support and encouragement and let off a little steam at the same time. Obviously, you don’t want to abuse this, but it is an option when you need to express yourself.

Always remember those wise words from Bill Withers.

6. Share

A mastermind group isn’t about hoarding what works best for you so that only you can benefit from it. That belief is coming from a place of scarcity and you need to shift into a place of abundance.

There is enough to go around for everyone. The world is vast and resources are endless.

The more you give the more you get back. So let go selfishness and share away. Lead by example and others will follow. All of a sudden 5 more people will share what has been working for them and now you are armed with enough ammunition to take your business to the next level.

Think about every super successful internet marketers out there today. Did they become legends because they kept everything to themselves? No, they freely gave away information to help others and became an authority figure in the industry.

Their traffic numbers went up, their subscribers and followers went up, and their profits went up.

Take Ray Higdon or Pat Flynn for example. They share everything and their transparency has blown up their businesses.

Make sense?

Great, now brings these tips with you the next time you mastermind it up.
